Course Details

  • The Foundation Degree in Business and Management is aimed at individuals who are keen to establish a career, or further progress their existing career in the field of business and management. The programme covers the key areas of business and management common to business organisations. The programme features a substantial vocational element and industry experience, equipping students with knowledge and understanding of the demands of business, and enabling them to make an immediate contribution in employment. Students study a combination of core business subjects and specialist subjects, and there is a clear emphasis on developing skills relevant to the world of work and making practical links between theory and the demands of modern day management.
    The programme provides challenging, comprehensive learning experiences and develops students’ intellectual, communication and practical abilities for example in investigative and analytical reports, scenario based management role plays and employment related presentations
    This makes it ideal for those students’ who wish to either begin their careers from the start of the course or those that are presently employed and wish to progress further in their present role.
    Over the two years students will study eight 30 credit modules:
    Year 1
    Dynamic Business Environment
    The aim of this unit is to develop an understanding of a range of dynamic factors in the general business environment over which organisations may have limited, if any control over. The unit introduces the topics of markets and globalisation, technological development, fundamental macroeconomic elements and concepts, social, cultural and ecological factors.
    Finance and Accounting Information for Managers
    Students will understand and interpret financial statements and use costing and budgeting techniques. This module provides an understanding on the importance of financial statements and the use of information systems to analyse critical data for managing organization financial resources.
    Understanding and Managing People
    This module provides students with a broad understanding of a range of concepts and models related to understanding and managing people, work and behaviour in national and international organisations.
    Ideas, Creativity and Entrepreneurship
    This module develops enterprising behaviours, skills and attributes. Creates awareness of entrepreneurial career paths and responsible entrepreneurship. Gives international perspective to the start-up process and is achieved through ideas generation workshops.
    Year 2
    Responsible Enterprise
    This module examines the nature and shape of business structure resulting from the responsible business initiatives and approaches enshrined in corporate governance/legal frameworks and implied by the growth/rise of CSR and sustainability business consciousness.
    Marketing and Operations
    This module will introduce the marketing and operations functions and related underpinning theory. It will address the critical links between these two functions and their relationship to other parts of an organisation and its overarching marketing strategy.
    Managing Effective Organisations
    This module explores research and best practice on how people are managed and organised at work including developing the skills of reflective Professional Development.
    Work Based Learning (Procedures, Policy and Practices)
    This module reflects on work experience/placement to include workplace procedures and policies and how they are used to maintain control. Issues around achieving compliance, variations in practice and the various drivers behind organisational policy.

  • You don’t have to have any specific business experience to study for a foundation degree in Business and Management, but you will need at least 3 GCSEs at grade C or above (including both English Language and Maths) and 160 UCAS Tariff Points.

    If you’re returning to education, our application team will happily look at any relevant Access programmes you’ve completed, and they can also take into account any work experience and existing knowledge & skill in the industry, often via an informal interview at the college.

  • Each module on this foundation degree is assessed in a different way, via both assignments at the end of every stage and regular monitoring throughout the whole course.

    You might find yourself completing a research project of your choice into the practices of another business, or you may be presenting your own proposals and analysis. From online quizzes to role-playing interviews, there will be a number of different ways for you to demonstrate the skills you’ve learnt.

  • After qualifying with a Level 5 Foundation Degree, you’ll have a number of different avenues open in front of you, and could take whichever one best suited your personal skill or interests.

    You might want to convert your qualification into a bachelor’s degree with a related top up course in business or management at The Manchester College. We have a number of options to choose from.

    Or you might be ready to start or advance your career, jumping straight into a new job or taking a promotion at work. You’ll be well qualified in a variety of fields, including account or administration management, business analysis, or management consultancy, with lots of different career paths you could follow.   • The fees (if applicable) for this 2 year, full time foundation degree are currently £5950.
