This course aims to provide a challenging, broad business education which balances theory and practice with personal development and the development of transferable and discipline specific skills in the field of business and management. The programme provides the basis for the progressive development of intellectual knowledge and understanding with vocational skills and competences that enhance student employability and develop creative, innovative students. It promotes work experience and real world practical business engagement with challenges, innovative assessment, employer engagement and action learning. The programme embraces the changing nature of the contemporary business environment and its impact on business processes, transactions and the role the individual plays as an enterprising leader. It seeks to prepare students for the diversity and complexity which accompanies a globally integrated and internationally focused business environment.
This award seeks to develop students who have a good grasp of the functions of business and their integrated nature. It seeks to develop this and prepare students for working in fast-paced organisations where change is rapid and the thinking needs to be creative and innovative. We want students to challenge the orthodoxy and be comfortable in situations when most managers would feel uncomfortable. Theory and practice are combined at all levels, collaborative working and flexibility of approach are very important.
There are six 20 credit core modules to complete within this programme.
Academic and Professional Excellence
This module aims to support students in developing cognitive, metacognitive, interpersonal, technological, professional and academic skills to enable them to successfully engage with their studies at level 6 and to progress successfully to post-graduate study. It is designed to assist students in developing specified subject-specific and employability skills alongside the development of linguistic competence.
Implementing Strategy and Change
This module investigates the variety of strategic options available to organisations. Creating potential strategies leads to option selections, where options are evaluated to decide whether they should be acted upon. The screening of options is done on the basis of evaluating the suitability (relevance to the strategic position), acceptability (to stakeholders) and feasibility (resource implications). A critical and practical perspective to challenge the paradigms of strategic management will enable you to question whether these still have a place in today's ever-changing globalised world.
Financial Fluency for Decision Making
The aim of this module is to acquire and critically examine knowledge of core concepts that inform senior management's decision-making in the area of financial management. In addition the module aims to develop a critical understanding of regulatory, political and economic contexts which contribute to a organisations operational and strategic activities.
Leadership in Contemporary Organisations
This module explores contemporary leadership challenges facing organisations today. In addition to exploring current literature, case studies and examples of leaders, students will develop a clear view of their personal leadership preferences and aspirations. Students will complete the module with a comprehensive understanding of effective leadership styles and approaches and how they might personally lead in their future roles.
Marketing in a Global Context
This module will enable students to learn to help companies build powerful, integrated go-to-market systems. We think of an effective go-to-market system as the missing link between a company’s strategy - its decisions about where to compete and how to win and the exceptional customer experiences that are the ultimate path to success. As this is a Top Up BA degree course, you’ll need to have a foundation qualification at Level 5 or equivalent in a business related area. This usually incudes 240 credits split evenly across Level 4 and Level 5. You should also have a strong motivation for business management!
If you don’t have a foundation degree, you’ll need an HND or an international equivalent. If you are applying as an international student, we’ll request evidence of your competency with the English Language (usually an overall IELTS score of 6.0).
How will I be assessed?
To ensure you’re prepared for the real business world, we use a variety of different assessment methods at the end of each unit, giving you experience and skill across a range of assignments.
This includes tasks like working in a team on a group project, creating a personal portfolio, presenting a report to the class, and solving problems set for you.
Continuing Your Journey
This qualification will give you all the real-world skills you need to succeed in business, and you’ll have the knowledge and experience to start or continue a career across a number of different industries.
