If you're skilled with languages and want to put your abilities to good use, you might want to consider a career as a professional interpreter. This 20-week course has been designed to help you prepare for the Diploma in Public Services Interpreting (DPSI) exam, giving you the confidence and expertise to interpret on a day-to-day basis.

With a focus on the Local Government option of the exam, you'll study two core components during your time with us. Exploring the topics of local government, we'll help you create a knowledge bank of the key terms and terminology you'll be using. You'll then study a range of vital interpreting and translating techniques to put your knowledge into practice.

We can even cover alternative law and health options, if it's required. As you reach the end of the course, you should be confident and ready to sit the external exam with the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) for the Diploma in Public Services Interpreting.

To enrol on this preparation course, you'll need to have excellent written and spoken command of both English and at least one foreign language. Ideally, you will also have previous interpreting experience.

We'll ask you to complete an initial written assessment in English and your chosen foreign language before accepting you onto the course. If you have a Certificate in Bilingual Skills (CBS) qualification, you'll be exempt from this initial assessment.

With a mixture of lectures, group work, discussion and individual research, you'll be assessed in a number of ways through a variety of methods, included observations, Q&As and a written assignment. You'll sit two final evaluations to assess the oral component and written part of the course.

When you have completed this preparation course, you'll should be well equipped to sit the exam with the Institute of Linguists and qualify for the Diploma in Public Services Interpreting. You could then continue onto a degree in interpreting and translating if you wanted to advance your skills further.

Once you have successfully earned that diploma, you'll be able to apply to join the National Register of Public Services Interpreters – the main database in England and Wales. Here you'll be able to pursue a career in this sector, working in a range of roles as court and police interpreters.
