Unique Rugby League Academy

College announce new partnership to form Manchester Rugby League Academy

The Manchester College is partnering with Manchester Metropolitan University and Manchester Rangers Rugby League club to develop a unique rugby league academy based at the Platt Lane sports complex in South Manchester.

The partnership is one of the first of its kind in the UK and will see all three organisations working together to create an education and playing pathway.

The Rugby League Academy, which opens its doors in September 2017, will be open to 16-19-year old students who will follow either Level 2 or Level 3 sport qualification.

Students at the academy will have high quality rugby league coaching from Manchester Rangers coaches, daily training on rugby specific elements, conditioning as well as participating in competitive fixtures as part of the AoC RFL NW League. Students also will have the opportunity to progress into the academy programme with Manchester Rangers and onto a number of courses at Manchester Metropolitan University on completion of the course.

College students who move from the academy to a course at Manchester Metropolitan University will be able to apply for the university’s sport’s scholarship scheme.

Barry Atkins, Assistant Principal: Sport, Public Services and Care Professions at The Manchester College, said: “The Manchester College are excited to be working in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University and Manchester Rangers to provide a high-quality rugby lLeague and educational pathway for school leavers.

“This programme is unique and will provide an excellent platform for participants to achieve their sporting and educational ambitions.”

Speaking about the partnership, Phil Fitton, Manchester Rangers Chairman said: “We have worked extremely hard on building individual relationships with both The Manchester College and Manchester Metropolitan University over the last couple of years and this partnership now ties these relationships up perfectly.

“The students will have access to some of the best sporting facilities in the country as well as a high-quality education and playing experience.

“Our ambition is to provide the players that are involved with the Academy a solid platform to go on to achieve great successes in both their sporting and personal lives.”
