Overview
This course aims to develop learners with existing knowledge and skills in gym instruction who would like to develop their skills and knowledge to pursue a career in personal training
All students will complete the four following mandatory units:
• Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health
• Applying the principles of nutrition to a physical activity programme
• Programming personal training with clients
• Delivering personal training sessions
Learners who not have achieved a Level 2 Fitness Instructing qualification or an NQF Active IQ Level 2 Fitness Instructing qualification or equivalent will also have to achieve the following three units at Level 2:
• Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
• Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
• Principles of exercise, fitness and health

Entry requirements
Applicants will require a suitable Level 2 qualification in Gym Instructing.
The course requires physical exertion, and individual participation is essential; therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary.
You’ll also require Functional Skills Level 1 in Maths and English and, as there is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved, learners should also have basic skills in communication pitched at levels 3 and 2 respectively.

How will I be assessed?
Over the course of your studies, you will complete a number of assessments including, coursework/projects, multiple choice examination, portfolio of evidence and practical demonstrations/assignments.

Continuing Your Journey
Upon successful completion of this qualification you will be able to progress on to Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Personal Training if you wish to develop and demonstrate occupational competence in personal training.

You may also wish to progress onto qualifications in related sectors, like Sports Massage, where you’ll be provided with the knowledge and skills to practice sports massage alongside personal training in the health club environment or own business
Alternatively, you may want to broaden your knowledge and skills by progressing onto qualifications mapping to additional branches of the Level 3 Standards, such as Exercise Referral and Leisure Management
The qualification will also provide knowledge and practical skills to enhance provision alongside other academic courses such as: National Diploma in Sports Studies, A-level PE and HND in Sport and Leisure.
These qualifications will be useful for those already working or looking to gain employment in roles as a gym instructor, fitness instructor or personal trainer.
