  • “The Manchester College is committed to their counselling students and maintains a robust training programme”
British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy

The aim of this programme of study is to equip you with practitioner-level training.
The BTEC Level 5 Prof Dip is one of the most robust counselling practitioner qualifications available.

The course explores in depth the theory and application of Person-Centred Therapy (PCT) as well as taking a close look at contemporary developments in the ever-changing field of therapy with a focus on the Pluralistic Framework for Counselling and Therapy developed by Cooper, McLeod and Dryden.

Our rationale for using PCT as our core model is that we take a holistic view of the person and recognize that individuals have a diverse range of personal resources and potential that can be unlocked in a safe, therapeutic climate. We are also committed to making this training relevant to the modern workplace and so we place a special emphasis on understanding how PCT can be applied to counselling services where there are limits to the number of sessions you would normally have with a client.

The diploma programme equips you to work in a range of settings in health services, prisons, community-based organisations, charities supporting people across a broad spectrum, substance misuse services, services for older people, and services for children and younger people.

3 years part-time -1 evening per week or
    2 years part-time - 2 days per week

Plus one workshop over 2 days per year (non-residential and not weekend)

  • To be eligible for this course, you will need to have previously completed a Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills or equivalent, or be suitably qualified in a related subject.

If you are an overseas applicant or if English is your second language, a proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is essential. The college would require you to demonstrate an IELTS score of 6.0.

  • Alongside units on personal development for counsellors there is an in-depth comparison of PCT with the two other major schools of therapy – CBT and Psychodynamic - that will enable you to recognize similarities and differences in their framework and application. This is the perfect course for those who wish to stretch their own understanding of what it means to be a professional counsellor in contemporary settings. The unique structure of this course gives you an edge to your practice as a reflective, analytical counsellor and therapist, who is able to practice with a high degree of self-awareness.

There is a varied range of assessment methods including written assignments, practical demonstrations and seminar presentations.

  • Once you have completed this course, you can further your studies on postgraduate certificates, diplomas or master degrees.

This is a practitioner-level qualification and once you have successful achieved this programme of study you will be able to work in the field.
