A-Level student Callum finds success in Future Journalist 2018 competition

Film Studies student Callum Bancroft channeled his inner reporter to come out on top at a journalism competition run by Staffordshire University.

Callum, who hopes to study filmmaking at university, came first in the Years 12/13 category of the Future Journalist 2018 competition.

As part of his entry, Callum had to write a feature on a topic he was passionate about.

“I wrote my piece on the rise of streaming services alongside terrestrial television and the effect it’s having on British culture,” said Callum.

“When my tutor told me about this opportunity, I thought it would be a great chance to improve my writing and it was great fun to do.”

Hundreds of young people entered the annual competition, which was judged by a local councilor and Staffordshire journalists.

Callum was announced as a winner during a ceremony hosted at Staffordshire University’s campus, where he was also given a tour of the university’s authentic, state-of-the-art newsroom.

He said: “It was a real surprise when I won and I didn’t expect it at all. This time last year I might not have considered even applying for something like this, so the experience has taught me to be more confident in my ability and embrace challenges.”
