Benjamin hoping to bake his way to a professional kitchen

Hospitality and Catering student Benjamin Charnock is hoping to test the skills he’s learned at College in a professional kitchen after passing his Level 2 Diploma in Bakery and Patisserie course with a D*.

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected the Hospitality industry more than most, but Benjamin is already applying for work experience and apprenticeship opportunities as the sector begins to recover and he prepares to start his Level 3 course in September, having achieved a fantastic D* grade for his Level 2.

“Covid-19 has made it difficult to gain experience in the hospitality sector but I hope I am able to do this over the next year so I can apply for jobs at the level I want,” Benjamin said.

“My time at The Manchester College has been good despite the challenges presented by Covid-19. The course was well-run, with Microsoft Teams lectures and full practical days for most of the year. The College also sent us food to have practical sessions at home, which was fun. We also had some excellent Chefs’ Forum and industry days with chefs and hotel managers answering our questions.

All of my tutors and assistants are fun, knowledgeable and helpful.

"They are professional and show you how to get the best results. If you are struggling, they help and offer encouragement, and they have real industry knowledge.”

And Benjamin’s praise for his tutors is reciprocated, with Howard Wallace, Departmental Team Leader for Hospitality, Travel and Tourism, praising Benjamin’s resilience and adaptability.

“During his time on the Level 2 course, Benjamin has excelled,” Howard said. “He is currently on track to be a high achiever on his course, which shows that he has the ability to overcome his disabilities.

“Ben has achieved three Distinctions and one merit so far in his practicals, which at this level is an outstanding achievement, and his written work is also exceptional. He has set up his own OneDrive portfolio as part of his course work, which we will use in the future for other students as an exemplar.

"Benjamin is also well liked in the group and he is always a pleasure to teach, as he is always positive in everything he does. He has overcome and adapted to every challenge he has been set with great success.”

After completing his Level 3 course and gaining valuable industry experience, Benjamin hopes to have a successful career as a baker or pastry chef at a top hotel or catering company.
