Maths students shine in FE Maths Challenge final
Eight maths students from The Manchester College are celebrating following their successes at the North West finals of the MEI FE Maths Challenge, which were held at Oldham College recently.
Two teams, comprising of GCSE and Functional Skills maths students from the College’s City Campus Manchester, Openshaw, and Shena Simon campuses, went head-to-head against students from nine other colleges over two rounds of competition: a timed Tarsia puzzle and a Kahoot quiz James Trimble, Jo Myers, Sahil Samiullah and Abdul Wasay worked together to come first in the GCSE maths competition.
Ed Igbinoba, Yaaba Danso, Emre Usyal and Zaib Sajaad then followed this up with second place in the Functional Skills maths competition.
Following the conclusion of the two activities, the judges commented on the students' excellent teamwork and positive behaviour.
One of the students who represented the College, Yaaba Danso, said: “On the day of the competition, I was tense and excited at the same time. I focused on staying calm and reminded myself of the hard work I had put in. The whole thing was an amazing experience, and I have gained a lot more confidence in my own ability.”
Emma Smith, Head of Maths, English and Progress at the College, commented: “A huge congratulations to the students for their commitment to the Maths Challenge. It’s clear how much they’ve enjoyed this competition and I’m looking forward to seeing how they use this experience to enhance the knowledge they’ve developed in the classroom.”
