The Manchester College students raise more than £22,000 for the Poppy Appeal

After attending a guest lecture delivered by the Royal British Legion's Greater Manchester Collection Co-ordinator, 150 students studying Public Services and Criminology at The Manchester College were motivated to support this year’s Poppy Appeal by selling poppies and raising funds.

Over a two-week period, the College’s students proudly supported the Royal British Legion’s 2025 appeal by fundraising at different locations around the Manchester, including high footfall locations such as supermarkets and Manchester Piccadilly Station .

Students collaborated in well-coordinated teams to engage the public and promote the cause, with learners aged 18 and over stepping into supervisory roles to oversee fundraising activities. Their enthusiasm, professionalism, and commitment not only generated vital support for the charity but also highlighted exceptional teamwork and a strong sense of community spirit.

Scott Pringle, Poppy Appeal Manager for the Royal British Legion, commented: “Throughout their volunteering, the students demonstrated professionalism, enthusiasm, and respect. Staff noted that they followed instructions diligently, engaged positively with the public, and represented the College with pride. Their contribution has not only supported a vital national cause but also enabled them to develop valuable communication and teamwork skills.”

Thanks to their dedication, the group raised an outstanding £22,169 - a remarkable achievement that will directly support the Royal British Legion’s ongoing work with the Armed Forces community.

Stuart Nickson, the Head of Department for Sport, Public Services and Criminology at the College, added: “Raising £17,000 for the Poppy Appeal in 2024 was a proud moment for the department, but our students have surpassed that milestone this year with a total of £22,169. It’s a testament to the character, drive, and community spirit of our Public Service and Criminology students, and to the staff who support them every step of the way.”

Stuart continued: “As a department, we are always striving to give the best possible opportunities for our students to grow, whilst working to support the local community alongside our external partners. This achievement delivers impactful student engagement through meaningful community work across Greater Manchester.”
