Students' achievements recognised at annual awards ceremony
Staff and students from across The Manchester College recently came together at the National Football Museum for the College’s annual Student Awards, to celebrate the incredible achievements of students from across the College over the last academic year.
All student finalists were nominated by either a member of staff or a fellow student before a panel of judges then shortlisted the best nominations in each category. Finalists got the chance to take two guests with them to the event, and throughout the night they were treated to delicious food and incredible student performances from the winners and runner-up in this year’s student talent competition.
The night was expertly hosted The Manchester College’s Katrina Ahuja, a Level 1 Business student from our Harpurhey campus alongside JJ Lewis, an Acting student at the Arden School of Theatre, part of UCEN Manchester.
During the ceremony, Katrina moved from host to award winner as she picked up the Student Choice Award, a category judged by students themselves. During the ceremony, attendees heard about the finalists’ amazing achievements and found out why their nominators were inspired to recognise them.
Amongst several awards that celebrated the College’s diverse student community, Somayeh Rezaee, an ESOL student, was awarded The Manchester College’s Adult Student of the Year.
The night ended with the 16-18 Student of the Year Award, which was presented by the College’s Principal, Rachel Curry, and awarded to Jenson Mellor, a student on the Routes to Skills course. Shortly after collecting the Student of the Year Award, Jenson said: "I can't believe that I've won. The feeling is indescribable. A huge thank you to the tutors and my fellow students that voted for me.”
Speaking after the awards, Rachel said: "The Student Awards ceremony is one of the most anticipated events of the year, and I’m incredibly proud of everything our finalists have accomplished. The standard of nominations this year was exceptional, and every student did brilliantly to be shortlisted in their category.
"Our finalists have embraced every opportunity, producing impressive work, building the advanced skills that employers are looking for, supported their fellow students, and successfully managed their studies alongside other responsibilities."
