The second part of your training as a BDA rep is the ‘Advanced Rep' course, which follows the same format as the Stage 1 course. It comprises four days of training, either face-to-face in Birmingham or online. Some reps choose to attend their advanced training as soon as possible after their initial training, while others prefer a break of around 12 months to consolidate the skills they have learned.

The course covers:

• BDA Stage Two
• Handling change at work
• Information for bargaining, negotiation and consultation
• Dealing with bullying and harassment
• Sexual harassment
• Dealing with workplace stress
• Mental health
• Employment law, the contract of employment and resisting contract changes
• The Trade Union Act
• Industrial action and the law
• Action planning.

You are required to be a representative of the British Dietetic Association (BDA) and have completed the Stage 1 Reps course.

You also need to ensure that you have time off to attend this course and that you have informed the appropriate union branch official or officer of your intention to take the course.

Throughout the course you will be continuously assessed by the course tutor through classroom and workplace-based activities.

Completing this course enables you to progress to further BDA or TUC training courses.
