City Campus Manchester
(Part Time Non Released - 3 weeks)
This course forms the first part of UCU's health and safety training programme. The course is for new health and safety reps, or those who have been in the role for some time but have never been trained, along with those in the branch who want to better understand the role and the legislation that enables health and safety reps to hold institutions to account. You need to be a UCU rep, departmental rep or equivalent to attend this course, but you don't need to be an H&S rep.
The course will cover:
• The role and functions of a safety rep
• How to obtain facilities and time off to carry out the safety rep's function using the safety reps and safety committee regulations
• Employers' duties under health and safety legislation
• A trade union and equal opportunities approach to health and safety
• How to organise UCU members around hazards at work
• Developing essential safety rep skills
• The UCU H&S workload campaign.
You are required to be a representative of the University and College Union (UCU).
You also need to ensure that you have time off to attend this course and that you have informed the appropriate union branch official or officer of your intention to take the course.
Throughout the course you will be continuously assessed by the course tutor through classroom and workplace-based activities.
Completing this course enables you to progress to UCU Health and Safety Stage 2.
