This course has been designed to enable URTU shop stewards to develop and improve their skills and knowledge. The course identifies ways in which improvements can be implemented to make the union more effective at a local level.
Course aims:
• Ensure you understand your role within the union and your responsibilities towards members
• Learn essential skills to assist you in representation at disciplinary and grievance meetings
• Develop your communication skills
• Give you a clearer understanding of relevant legislation
• Consolidate your negotiating skills
• Give you an understanding of the importance of recruitment and retention
• Develop your recruitment skills
• Increase your confidence as a shop steward.
You are required to be a representative of United Road Transport Union (URTU).
You also need to ensure that you have time off to attend this course and that you have informed the appropriate union branch official or officer of your intention to take the course.
Throughout the course you will be continuously assessed by the course tutor through classroom and workplace-based activities.
Completing this course enables you to progress to URTU Advanced shop steward.
