Wythenshawe Campus achieves Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction

The Manchester College’s Wythenshawe Campus has achieved the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction, recognising an outstanding commitment to environmental sustainability and community action.

Eco-Schools is an internationally recognised programme that empowers students to take the lead on environmental initiatives, promoting sustainability, raising awareness, and driving meaningful change within their communities. The Green Flag Award is granted to education settings that demonstrate a strong, sustained commitment to improving their environmental impact.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for the College, which is the first further education provider to pilot the Eco-Schools programme within the sector, in partnership with Manchester City Council. The recognition reflects not only the success of the initiative at Wythenshawe, but also the potential for wider impact across further education.

Throughout the 2025/26 academic year, students and staff at the College’s Wythenshawe Campus worked collaboratively on a wide range of environmental projects. These included community litter picks, restoration work at Park Wood, and student-led initiatives through the College’s Eco Society. Sustainability has also been embedded across the curriculum, with learners from Animal Care, Construction, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Foundation Learning and other subject areas contributing to cross-College activity.

The award highlights the enthusiasm, commitment and teamwork shown by students and staff, as well as the positive contribution young people can make in supporting their local environment.

Rachel Curry, Principal of The Manchester College, said: “We are incredibly proud of the students and staff at our Wythenshawe Campus for achieving the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction. This recognition reflects their passion, commitment and determination to make a positive difference to both the environment and their local community.

As a College, we are committed to empowering our students to become responsible, active citizens, and it’s fantastic to see sustainability embedded so strongly across campus life. This work also supports our wider ambitions to reduce environmental impact and build a more sustainable future across LTE Group*.
