Key lessons
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that no two paths are the same - and that’s a good thing! Whether you’re into filmmaking, design, music, content creation, or something else entirely, your unique experiences will shape your journey.
My career success and milestones didn’t happen overnight. They were built on years of learning, experimenting, failing, and pushing forward.
Here are some key lessons I’ve picked up along the way:
1. The unpredictable road
My journey has been anything but a straight line. I started in theatre, moved into university studies, tried my hand at teaching, and eventually landed in business. Each phase taught me something valuable. So, if you’re feeling unsure about where you’re headed, don’t stress. The twists and turns often lead to the best opportunities.
2. People are everything
Your network is your greatest asset. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, challenge you, and support your ambitions. Find mentors, collaborate with classmates, and never underestimate the power of a solid community. Success is rarely a solo effort!
3. Use what’s available to you
We live in an era where information is at our fingertips. Take advantage of online courses, workshops, books, and free tools. Whether it’s YouTube tutorials, networking events, or simply asking questions, the right resources can take you further than you think.
4. Start now, perfect later
One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever heard is: “Start now, get perfect later.” Too many people wait for the perfect moment to begin - but that moment rarely comes. Instead, start with what you have, learn as you go, and refine along the way. Your future self will thank you.
5. Build and engage with your community
Don’t just create in isolation - share your work, get feedback, and engage with others in your field. Whether it’s through social media, local events, or college projects, putting yourself out there is key to growth and new opportunities.
6. Celebrate the small wins
Every step forward is a step closer to your goal. Don’t wait until you’ve “made it” to acknowledge your progress. Every project, every new skill, and every challenge overcome is a stepping stone. Celebrate them.
7. Your unique perspective matters
What sets you apart is you - your experiences, your ideas, your way of seeing the world. Don’t try to fit into a mould. The most successful creatives bring something fresh and personal to the table.
8. Teamwork makes the dream work
No one achieves success alone. Learn to work with others, play to each other’s strengths, and be open to collaboration. A great team can take a good idea and make it incredible.
9. Trust the process
There will be setbacks. There will be times when things don’t go as planned. The key is to keep going. Stay committed to your vision, adapt when needed, and trust that the work you put in will pay off.
Practical steps to get started today
If you take away anything from this, let it be these action points:
- Make connections – Talk to people, network, and collaborate.
- Be curious – Try different skills and don’t limit yourself.
- Use the tools – Take advantage of free and accessible resources.
- Ask for feedback – Get input from peers and mentors.
- Create outside of class – Build your portfolio with side projects.
- Stay professional – Approach every opportunity with dedication.
- Keep learning – Books, podcasts, and mentors can change your game.
Final thought: Are you happy?
At the end of the day, success isn’t just about money, fame, or recognition - it’s about fulfilment. Ask yourself: “Am I happy with what I’m creating and where I’m headed?” If the answer is yes, keep going. If not, adjust, experiment, and find what truly excites you.
Whatever your path, keep pushing forward, stay inspired, and embrace the journey. You never know where it might take you!
