Sport students gain industry insight at Women in Sport Conference

A cohort of students enrolled on Sport courses at The Manchester College were given the opportunity to attend the UCFB Women in Sport Conference, where they heard from industry leaders, explored career pathways and developed valuable knowledge to support their future ambitions in the sector.

Six female students studying both Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science and the Level 3 Certificate in Sport and Physical Activity at the College were selected to attend the UCFB Women in Sport Conference at Wembley Stadium. Celebrating the achievements of women across the sector, the event showcased the diverse career pathways available to those with a passion for sport.

The students heard from inspiring role models, including keynote speakers from leading organisations. This included Mya Graham from talkSPORT, one of the UK's largest sports radio networks; Jenelle Grant, Basketball Operations Manager with the National Basketball Association (NBA), the world's premier professional basketball league; and Sinade Lambe, Head of Communications at Rising Ballers, a digital media platform dedicated to showcasing emerging football talent.

Through these sessions, the students gained valuable insight into studying sport at higher education level, connected with industry leaders and explored a variety of career opportunities.

As part of their experience, the group were given a guided tour of the iconic venue. The tour gave students a behind-the-scenes look at one of the world's leading sporting venues, helping them gain a greater understanding of the many roles involved in delivering major sporting events. The experience brought potential career pathways to life and demonstrated how classroom learning can be applied in the workplace.

Tutor Ambokile Bell commented on how the experience provided the students with a greater understanding of careers in sport, saying:

We’re delighted that this opportunity helped our students develop both their knowledge and understanding of the industry, while providing them with an unforgettable experience that will stay with them well beyond their time with us.

To make the experience even more memorable, the group attended England's 2027 Women's World Cup qualifier against Spain at Wembley Stadium the evening before the conference. The students were able to cheer on the Lionesses as they secured a 1-0 victory, providing an inspiring showcase of women's sport ahead of the conference.

Justine Stevenson added:

The event truly highlighted the breadth of opportunities available to female students who are interested in pursuing roles in sport. Our students left the event feeling inspired, motivated and excited about their next steps.
