Ready to embark on a culinary journey round the world
After completing her journey with The Manchester College, Revae Marley is ready to take the next step towards her aspirational goal to travel the world to develop her baking skills, learning different baking styles and languages.
Revae first attended The Manchester College eight years ago, studying a Culinary Skills course. Her desire to develop her skills in the kitchen led her to progress onto a Level 2 qualification, before completing her Level 3 in Technical Patisserie and Confectionary this year, when she achieved D*.
Like many students receiving their results today, Revae’s learning over the last few years has been a mix of learning at home and in the classroom, and for a practical based qualification, it meant the tutors had to come up with new and innovative ways of teaching. Revae explains: “Our tutor would send ingredient boxes to us at home, and we’d all come together to do the practical lesson in our own kitchen over webcam. I enjoyed the different experience, and we were really supported, but I was glad to get back to face to face learning, it was a lot easier.”
Alongside studying, Revae worked as a pastry chef at BLVD Manchester. Whilst juggling studying and work was a challenge, Revae saw the benefit of doing both. She adds: “I’m glad I did it, it’s pushed me on. Time management was a weakness, but by making me manage my time more, it’s really helped me to grow.”
Revae has enjoyed her time at the College and welcomed the support from her tutors. “I’d definitely recommend the College, you get a lot more support here, your tutors care and make sure you’re on track. And the equipment, everything, is up to standard. Resources wise, you also have an advantage. The library gives you access to free stuff to help you revise, which I didn’t realise before and really helped with my theory work.”
For now, Revae is continuing with her job at BLVD Manchester as she makes plans to move towards her long-term plan to mix travel and bakery and continue her learning in different bakeries and cake shops around the world.
