The Manchester College unveils first images of its new engineering facilities

Artist impressions provide a sneak-peak at the state-of-the-art facilities being developed at Openshaw Campus to prepare students for careers in engineering.

The Manchester College is excited to share the first images of its brand-new £4 million engineering facility which will open at its Openshaw Campus in January 2027.

The purpose-built, 630m² space has been co-designed with employer partners to ensure students gain the knowledge and practical experience required for careers in high-demand engineering sectors.

The facilities, which mark a significant investment in technical education and skills across Greater Manchester, will support the College’s continued commitment to deliver industry-led curriculum and bridge the gap between education and employment.

The new engineering building will feature a range of modern learning environments, including:

  • A mechanical engineering workshop equipped with the latest CNC machines, lathes and 3D printing technology

  • State-of-the-art fabrication and welding bays

  • A specialist PLC and electronics laboratory focused on automation and control systems

  • A professional CAD suite with access to the latest industry software.

These facilities have been carefully designed by employers and industry specialists to replicate real working environments, ensuring students develop the technical skills, confidence and experience needed to progress into employment or further study. It will support the expansion of the College’s engineering provision, enabling more students to access high-quality training, from Level 1 to Level 3 courses, including T Levels.

Four new classrooms will also be introduced to support theory-based learning, including English and maths, while existing construction spaces will be upgraded to meet growing demand in plumbing, joinery, electrical installation and brickwork.

Assistant Principal Ella Tsui-Lau commented: “As demand for skilled engineers continues to grow, investments like this are essential in supporting Greater Manchester’s workforce needs and driving economic growth. Through close collaboration with our brilliant employer partners, we can ensure our curriculum remains aligned with the latest industry requirements, equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed for future careers.”

By combining industry expertise with state-of-the-art learning environments, we create clear pathways into high-skilled employment while playing a key role in shaping the future of technical education across the region.

The development marks an exciting new chapter for the College’s Openshaw Campus, providing students with access to some of the most advanced engineering facilities in further education.
