Visual Arts students benefit from architect insights
The Visual Arts department was delighted to welcome Ian Simpson from the renowned architecture firm Simpson Haugh. The college hosted the distinguished architect to discuss the design and development of our City Campus Manchester building.
The Kedleston Group (an organisation that operates specialist schools and children's homes across the UK) approached The Manchester College to host Ian, the architect of their building, allowing students to ask questions related to their architecture project.
The discussion focused on the building’s shape, form, purpose, usage, and structure - essentially the basic elements of its design. Our students were tasked with asking questions based on primary research, aiming to gather insights from the architect’s perspective.
During the session, students also explored the importance of space and community within Greater Manchester, and how thoughtful architectural design can help support creativity. Students then reflected on how spaces can act as hubs to spark and pollinate ideas, encouraging collaboration and innovation.
Rebecca Rogers, Head of Department for Visual Arts at the College, said: "This was a great opportunity for our students to gain industry insights from a famous architect and learn about a career path that they might not have previously considered. A huge thank you to Ian for taking the time to visit us.”
