Students will develop both the technical knowledge and practical skills needed for a career in Civil Engineering and the wider construction industry.
During the course, students will:
- Learn about civil engineering principles, construction technology, materials, structures, sustainability, health and safety, and construction methods.
Develop site surveying and setting-out skills, using industry-standard equipment such as Total Stations to take measurements, establish levels and coordinates, and collect site data.
- Develop CAD and digital engineering skills, producing and interpreting engineering drawings and designs using industry-relevant software.
- Apply engineering mathematics and calculations to solve practical civil engineering and construction problems.
- Explore how roads, buildings, foundations, drainage systems and other infrastructure are designed and constructed.
- Complete practical and project-based activities based on real-life civil engineering scenarios.
- Develop skills in project planning, risk management, sustainability and problem-solving.
- Complete an Employer Set Project, applying technical knowledge to an industry-related challenge.
- Complete a Civil Engineering Occupational Specialism, developing more advanced practical and technical skills relevant to the industry.
- Undertake a minimum 45-day industry placement, gaining valuable experience with an employer and applying their learning in a real workplace.

Applicants will have achieved 5 GCSE's grade 9-4 including English and Maths.

Willing to carry out a Work Placement, you will be supported in finding a work placement relevant to your study.

This qualification will be studied via “blended learning”, taking the very best classroom-based activity and combining it with the very best digital and remote learning and delivery from our industry experts.
Time in college will be spent learning in our brand-new purpose built Openshaw construction centre, in industry standard workshops and classrooms. Some of your learning time will be “Project Led”, bringing together your theory, knowledge and practical skills into an individual or group project, such as a community action project.
You'll be assessed through two examination papers, paper 1 (Science and Building Technology) and paper 2 (Construction Industry and Sustainability), and an employer set project.
There is also a single synoptic assessment for the Occupational Specialist Component, which is an extended ‘design, development and implementation' project.

You could continue your journey with us by progressing on to degree-level study with our higher education partner, UCEN Manchester by completing a HNC or HND in Construction and the Built Environment, both of which are industry recognised level 4 and level 5 qualifications. Students progressing from The Manchester College will receive a cash award through the Achievers Scholarship.

Some of our HNC/HND students have then gone on to university to study degrees at university such as:
• BSc (Hons) Architecture Design and Technology
• BSc (Hons) Building Surveying
• BSc (Hons) Construction Project Management
• BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering
• BSc (Hons) Environmental Science
• BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying
• You could also progress on to a career in the construction industry and become a construction manager, civil engineer, quantity surveyor or even specialise in architectural design.
Whichever path you choose to take, you'll be developing a wide range of abilities and knowledge to help you succeed in a number of different career opportunities in industry.
