Stuart Nickson, who is Head of Department for Sport, Public Services and Criminology at The Manchester College, added: “By the time they start their placements, our students will have already delivered personal training sessions in the state-of-the-art sports facilities at our Openshaw Campus, so they’ll arrive at PureGym with a good level of experience. Stuart explained: “This initiative is all about helping our students transition smoothly into the fitness industry and making them ideally prepared to be interviewed for roles such as Personal Trainer or Fitness Coach.

Students Help to Build Openshaw Campus on Placement Scheme

The students will undertake on-site supervised tasks working with site engineers and health & safety managers before delivering a project at the end of the six-week placement. The state of the art facility they are helping to build will feature a range of industry standard facilities, including a six court sports hall, outdoor pitch, gym and sports lab; a health suite with a hospital ward and infectious disease area for healthcare students; and brand new workshops for construction, mechanics and engineering students.

Staff Profile: Meet Julie Steadman

Within a few years I had dissolved my freelance business and was teaching full time delivering fashion on the 16-18 BTEC programmes at The Manchester College’s Moston, Harpurhey and Openshaw campuses. I eventually became the Programme Team Leader for Visual Arts (Openshaw campus) and had my first experience of managing staff.  I have always had a keen interest in student support so when a Deputy Campus Manager vacancy came up I decided I would try something different.
