Construction students help out at 422 Manchester

Students from The Manchester College’s Industry Excellence Academy for Construction & Engineering have been honing their skills on a working site while helping out a local charity. 422 Manchester is a project by Manchester Vineyard , based in Longsight and Ardwick, which is currently working to restore the former Longsight Youth Centre into a new community hub, breathing new life into the local area. In a true team effort, around 40 students from a range of Level 2 and 3 courses have lent their time and skills to assist with the project, including electrical installation, plumbing, plastering and site joinery.

Construction and Engineering Applicants Online Summer School

The programme has helped us to evaluate things like their timekeeping, problem solving and creativity skills, not things you can normally do on a traditional one-day event such as New Student Day.  “The commitment and enthusiasm of the students has been incredible and we have seen levels of contribution and input from students in excess of what we might see in traditional classroom settings.

'People should be encouraged to be creative'

There was one stage where everywhere you’d go, all you could hear were Oasis, but I think we’ve gone beyond that now. Whenever I come back to Manchester I’ll see posters for loads of new bands and I hear new bands rehearsing in warehouse spaces and it doesn’t sound anything like what went before. I think that’s quite encouraging.
