Schools explore careers in animal care at ‘hidden jobs’ experience day

The Manchester College’s Schools Liaison team hosted the event for six Manchester United Foundation Hub schools, which saw businesses from in and around Manchester give 100 Year 10 pupils a taste of the wide-variety of career opportunities available in the industry. The College's Animal Management students were on hand to answer any questions before the pupils took part in a range of activities in the College's Animal Care department, including meeting Raccoon Milo and Giant Bull Frog Penelope.

The Manchester College hits platinum with Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce

The Manchester College has been awarded a Platinum Social Value Award by the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce in recognition of its participation in a range of local business and community initiatives. To achieve the award the College participated in 10 interventions throughout the 2019 calendar year. Interventions are defined as participation in a variety of events, including offering mock interviews, guest speaking, work experience offers or participating in an industry board.

A Level achievement for The Manchester College students

This year’s results saw a 100 per cent pass rate for 19+ students, which is a 10 per cent increase from 2018. Over 2000 students on vocational courses also excelled, with 85 per cent achieving the A Level equivalent of three C’s and above and 56 per cent achieving the equivalent of three A’s and above.

Visual Arts in Sharp Focus at The Manchester College

As part of the ‘#didyouknow Design and Visual Arts’ week, which runs from 10 to 14 June, fashion designer and former student Zara Khalique , who has sold to likes of Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus, visited students to offer tips and advice on her experiences in the industry.

A-Level students flourish in EY Foundation Smart Futures paid work experience

Natalia Lesniak, Freshta Samadi and Gagandeep Kaur joined a group of 27 A-Level students from schools and colleges across the north west at multinational professional services firm EY. Smart Futures is a 10-month programme that includes paid work experience for Year 12 students, geared towards improving their chances of getting a job or going on to higher education.

Women in Construction Week 2022

Female applications amongst 16-18 year olds at the College have more than doubled when comparing last year’s applications to 2019 however, there is still a long way to go to attract more young women into construction with less than 10% of the College’s construction classrooms being female.  To tackle the misconceptions about gender specific roles, The School Liaison Team ran an online event with employers Willmott Dixon, Kier, and Bowmer and Kirkland last year inviting schools to attend the session.

The Manchester College supports Association of College’s ‘Mind the Skills Gap’ campaign

Funding cuts mean spending per pupil in 2024-25 will still be around 5% below 2010-11 levels and for adult students it is 22% below 2009–10 levels.   Commenting on the College’s support for the campaign, Rachel Curry, Principal of The Manchester College, said: “With businesses in Greater Manchester and across the UK struggling to fill vacancies, the value of a high-quality technical education which equips learners with the skills needed to drive economic growth has never been higher.

Students visit BBC to pitch winning mockumentary for Rio Olympics

The teams had to do a 5-minute video pitch explaining what their idea was and why it would make a great TV programme, as well as a 10-minute live presentation on how team members worked together to create their pitch. really good opportunity for us to find new and diverse talent Creative Media Production students from The Manchester College’s Shena Simon Campus, Scott Dunwoodie, Sarah Hannan, Vinny Lee and Otis Sarge spent six weeks researching and developing their ideas.
